So you’re starting to work out more and searching for protein powders, wondering which are nut free? Been there, done that. Nut free protein powders to the rescue. We’ve compiled a list of whey, chicken, plant based, seed based, vegan, bone broth, and pea based protein powders — all of which are nut free — for you to research. There are a lot of different types of protein powders on the market. And they each have different benefits and potential downsides, depending on your dietary preferences and nutritional goals. Some have one source, some have multiple sources. Some have plant sources of protein, others have animal sources of protein.

Decide which is right for you by reading a little snippet on each of these nut free protein powders. When searching for a protein powder, you might not know what you want or you might be working with a trainer and have a specific goal in mind.  Are you looking to increase your daily nutrition intake in general? Are you looking for the highest protein per serving, or are you looking for the purest sourced protein, so much so that the protein powder is only derived from one ingredient?  Do you have other food allergies besides nuts? All these factors play a determining factor in which nut free protein powder is right for you.

You have choices! You can choose from keto, paleo, plant based, vegan, gluten free, etc. Below you’ll find ten options for varying types of protein powders, and varying sources of that protein, all nut free.

So if you’re trying to find a nut free protein powder that’s right for you and your personal goals, here are ten brands to look into that provide nut free options.

    1. Best Overall: OWYN

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

This 100% Vegan Plant-Based Protein Powder by OWYN (Amazon) is available in two flavors: Dark Chocolate & Vanilla. I like this brand because it’s ingredients are clean and allergen friendly. It’s free from the top eight most common allergens, and specifically free from peanuts and tree nuts. It’s also free from gluten, wheat, egg, dairy, and stevia. If you follow the keto diet, this is a protein powder you’ll want to take a closer look at as it’s Keto Friendly. It’s also a great option for nut free vegans as it’s 100% vegan and certified vegan.

Both the vanilla and the chocolate powders are made from a blend of plant based protein that contains 20 g of protein in every serving. The blend is constructed from pea protein, pumpkin protein, and chia.  For added health benefits, this protein powder provides a superfood and greens blend made of kale, spinach, broccoli, and 1B CFU probiotics. I love the idea of adding probiotics into a clean protein powder, because with the addition of the probiotics, you are more likely to absorb the rest of the nutrients.

The plant protein used in this powder delivers all 9 essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and they help promote the healthy development of skin, muscle, hair, and nails. This powder also contains naturally occurring BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids), which is great for muscle recovery.

    2. Runner-Up: NutraVegan Plant Based Nut Free Protein Powder

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

The NutraVegan Plant Based Protein Powder (Amazon) is another great option for those that are looking for a nut free protein powder that uses plant protein. Like the OWYN powder, NutraVegan has probiotics mixed into its formula to help aid digestion. It’s advertised as smooth and creamy after being mixed with water or milk.

OWYN uses organic cane sugar whereas NutraVegan uses stevia. Their sources of plant protein also differ. For example, NutraVegan sources it’s protein from peas, organic brown rice, hemp, organic quinoa, and pumpkin seeds. So in addition to the ingredient choices of pea protein and pumpkin protein from OWYN, the protein sourced by NutraVegan includes brown rice, quinoa, and hemp — while excluding chia. Each serving of Nutravegan contains 17 g of plant protein.

It comes in three flavors: chocolate, natural, and vanilla. It is similar to OWYN in terms of being allergen friendly, but NutraVegan takes it a step further. Nutravegan is free from the  14 most common allergens — so it’s free from eggs, milk, mustard, peanuts, crustaceans and molluscs, fish, sesame seeds, soy, sulfites, tree nuts, wheat or triticale, celery, lupin, and gluten.

This protein powder is made inside a dedicated peanut free and tree nut free factory. Melanie Wildman founded NutraVegan By Nutracelle as a mother of two children with life-threatening food allergies. She created this nut free protein powder as an option for other mothers who want to avoid cross-contamination.

    3. Runner-Up: MaryRuth’s Organic Vegan Nut Free Protein Powder

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

This organic protein powder by MaryRuth's (Amazon) is USDA certified and prominently displays nut free labeling. It comes in one flavor, and that flavor is Creamy Chocolate Fudge. Seeing as it’s chocolate, do we really need another option?!

It’s vegan, soy free, nut free, dairy free, gluten-free, and paleo friendly. Each serving contains 14 g of plant based protein. It contains no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, wheat, gluten, milk eggs, peanut, soy, tree nuts, crustaceans, shellfish or fish. It’s sourced from plant based protein, all entirely derived from organic sprouted pumpkin seeds. It’s made from six ingredients only. Those ingredients are: organic pumpkin seeds, organic cane sugar, organic fair trade cocoa powder, organic natural chocolate flavor, organic natural vanilla flavor, and xanthan gum. It contains no fillers and is whole foods sourced.

This would be a great choice for those who struggle with a weak digestive system since pumpkin is known for aiding in digestion.

And although pumpkin seeds are a large part of this formula, it doesn’t taste like pumpkin. Instead it tastes like chocolate.

If you do decide to order this powder and want to mix a scoop or two inside your smoothies, I suggest using a thicker milk, like an oat milk or a 2% milk. If not, just make sure you use a fork to break up the powder if it starts to clump. Worth it for the taste and clean ingredients.

    4. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Nut Free Protein Powder

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

The Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder (Amazon) is one of the most popular protein powders, period, with one serving offering 24 g of protein. The whey protein blend includes: whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, and whey peptides. Something to know about whey is that it’s derived from milk. So, if you’re allergic to milk, you will want to stay away from all whey products. Good news is that the first three powders we covered were all vegan, and therefore, completely milk free.

But, if you don’t have a milk allergy, whey tends to be a popular choice as it’s a complete protein as is. It’s great for muscle recovery and gaining strength.

It comes in six flavors: Banana Cream, Delicious Strawberry, Strawberry & Creme, Strawberry Banana, Vanilla, and Vanilla Ice Cream.

It’s ingredients are nut free although it isn’t labeled nut free. So, I called the company and inquired about possible cross-contamination. The service representative confirmed that the only possible contamination would be through the air, but not through the machinery itself.

    5. Ora Organic Vegan Nut Free Protein Powder

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

This is a great option for someone that is looking to increase their daily nutrition intake as well as their daily protein intake. The Ora Organic Vegan Protein Powder (Amazon) contains 21 grams of plant based protein, from a lot of different plant sources. It samples a lot of different whole foods to gather whole nutrition rather than focusing on only one protein source. For example, the Ora Protein, Superfood, & Greens Blend inside this nut free protein powder contains 22 organic, whole food ingredients. I was particularly impressed by the use of Organic Turmeric.

Wow right? It’s formulated this way to offer all of the essential amino acids needed to create a complete protein.

This next point is minor of course, but I also like the packaging of this protein powder. I find it to be rather aesthetically pleasing. It comes in three flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Vanilla Chai. You can either order sachets or a large tub of powder. No ingredients used in this powder contain nuts and it’s packaging specifically mentions being peanut free.

    6. Naked WHEY Nut Free Protein Powder

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

The Naked WHEY Grass Fed Protein Powder (Amazon) is made of only one ingredient – Whey Protein Concentrate. The whey itself comes from pasture-fed cows’ milk sourced from small dairy farms in Northern California. Each serving is packed with 5.9g of BCAAs, which stands for branched-chain amino acids. BCAAs aid in muscle recovery and development, making this a great before or post workout snack.

This product contains no artificial sweeteners, and no additives. If you’re looking for a whey protein powder that prioritizes clean ingredients, this is definitely a brand to check out.  It’s made from 100% Grass Fed Whey Protein Powder, and comes in five flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Unflavored, Matcha, and Strawberry. It’s available through Amazon in 1lb and 5 lb offers.

    7. Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein Powder

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

This Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein Powder (Amazon) is made from real bone broth. It’s made a point to be allergen friendly, and it’s free from dairy, gluten, and nuts. Each serving contains 20 grams of bone broth protein. It contains Collagen Type II, which is great for bones, joints, hair, nails, and skin. The bone broth collagen is sourced from animal protein, and through non-GMO chickens from the United States.

It comes in four flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Turmeric, and Pure.

    8. 100% Egg Protein

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

This protein powder is another option for animal sourced protein. If you’re allergic to milk or whey, egg protein might be something to look into. It’s free of corn, dairy, fish, gluten, milk, peanuts, salt, shellfish, starch, sugar, tree nuts, wheat, and yeast. It contains no artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors. The 100% Egg Protein Powder (AmazonVitamin Shoppe) by Healthy N Fit Nutritionals comes in two flavors: Vanilla Ice Cream, and Heavenly Chocolate. It’s low in carbs and completely lactose free. You can purchase it in a tub of 2 lbs from the Vitamin Shoppe or through amazon. (amazon link)

It provides 22 grams of egg protein per serving.

    9. BarnDad's 100% CHXN Chicken Protein Isolate

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

The BarnDad’s CHXN nut free protein powder uses animal protein, sourced from chickens. And although bone broth protein powders use protein sourced from chickens, this is less focused on collagen and more focused on actual chicken isolate. Each serving is equivalent to a 3 oz serving of chicken. The L-Arginine in this product is high, with chicken isolate powder containing 180% more L-Arginine than the average Whey powder. L-Arginine is an amino acid that helps build proteins. If you’re looking to gain strength and build muscle, look into BarnDad’s Chicken Protein Isolate (Amazon) and do more research to see if it’s right for you.

It’s non-allergenic, gluten free, lactose free, and dairy free. It contains BCAA’s, so a bonus for your muscle recovery. It offers 21 g/serving of complete protein and also comes in a chocolate flavor which you can learn more about on the BarnDad website. Note that this chocolate flavor does not contain nuts and is non-allergenic, though it is almond flavored (a little too spooky for my taste!).

    10. Bluebonnet Dual-Action Whey + Casein Nut Free Protein Powder

Last update on 2024-09-15 // Source: Amazon

This Bluebonnet Nutrition Dual-Action Protein Powder (Amazon) sources it’s protein from:  whey (quickly absorbed) and casein (slowly absorbed throughout the day). Because of it’s dual benefits, i.e. the whey makes it a great pre/post workout snack and the casein makes it a great snack regardless of what time of day it is, it’s rather versatile. This powder contains no artificial sweeteners or flavors.

As a whey and casein protein powder, both ingredients derive from milk. This particular brand goes through a microfiltration process that removes 98% of lactose to make it easier for the consumer to digest.

As an animal sourced protein, the casein and whey come from grass-fed, free-roaming cows. It’s also sourced from cows that are not treated with antibiotics and growth hormones like recombinant bovine growth. Which, when looking at milk products, is always something you will want to consider.

According to BlueBonnet, “each serving contains 26 g of protein, along with 5.7 g of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), and 5.6 g of glutamic acid + glutamine for immediate use by the body”. The BCAA’s make it another great option for someone getting into bodybuilding and that’s looking for products promoting muscle recovery.

This product states on the label that it isn’t made inside a dedicated nut free facility but that it’s free of tree nuts and peanuts. It’s also free of egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, what, corn, yeast, gluten, barley, and rice.

Summary for These Nut Free Protein Powders
